As we leave 2022 behind and usher in a new year, let us take a moment to awaken and revitalize our dreams. It is time to get re-energized as we welcome the new year and explore a few tactics that can help us set and consquer our New Year's resolutions for 2023.
1. Know your “why”
Get connected to the reason(s) behind your resolutions. For example, if you want to lose some weight, why is that so? Is it just for aesthetic reasons, because it will make you feel better, or because you’re worried about your health? Different reasons for resolutions will give you different types of motivation as well as different ways of and attitudes to achieving your goals, so make sure you’re absolutely clear in your head on this. Your reasons will often inform and influence your sense of motivation, and invigorate your drive as you go through the process of achieving your goals.
2. Be specific
Once you know why you’re doing this, then you can focus on the how. Break down your end goal into clear, actionable chunks or “mini goals”. For example, if you’re trying to eat more vegetables, then one of your mini goals should be to collect recipes that you’ll enjoy that involve vegetables. A great way to do this is to attach numbers onto things, like saying that you’ll start by having these vegetable-rich recipes two times a week in January, then increase that to four times a week in February, and so on until it becomes a habit to have plenty of vegetables in your diet.
3. Share your goals and your progress
Letting your friends, family, and even coworkers know about your goals will keep you accountable. They’ll check in with you, inquire about your progress, may have some tips that can help you, and might even want to join you on your journey! You can also keep a journal or use your phone to track your progress. Seeing how far you’ve come really helps to push you to continue on.
4. Check in with and be kind to yourself
It’s very important to also be in conversation with yourself. Ask yourself often:
• How am I feeling about my goal?
• How are the actions that I’m taking towards my goal making me feel?
• Have I been succeeding? Why/why not?
• Who/what is hindering my success, if anything?
See what’s working and what isn’t and make changes accordingly. When you’re met with failure, be kind to yourself. It happens. Life is about learning from these mistakes and moving on, so focus instead on your achievements and how you can continue to succeed.
5. Change your environment
And finally, make sure that your environment is conducive to your goals. This means both the people and the things that you surround yourself with. If you want to lose weight, stay away from people who eat and drink to excess. Find a gym or exercise buddy. If you want to stop smoking, stop going to the corner store that has your favorite cigarettes and stay away from smokers.
